The Antlers: “Drift Dive”

The Antlers have made a name for themselves as a band who makes rather powerfully emotional music, their debut LP Hospice was a disturbingly beautiful concept album about the relationship between a cancer patient and a hospice worker and their follow up Burst Apart gave heartstrings a good ol tug too. However, on their new EP Undersea, recorded in a two month break, The Antlers lighten the mood with gorgeous and serene soundscapes that let you drift off into the big blue. If you like Air or Zero 7 then Undersea will fit right in.

You can stream the new 4-track EP over on their facebook page here and buy it here.

What Was Liked Last Month: January/February

I haven’t done one of these in a while but thought I probably should get back into it. Also, how is it March already, anyone else a little surprised how that crept up on us? A little sneaky, I think.

Anyone, let’s do this. Here is what I liked, and thought you’d probably like, in January/February. Huzzah!

First off the bat, you should probably check out ITYLTS Best of 2011 series. This was our big rundown of 2011 including our favourite songs, covers, remixes and what we want to be big in 2012.

January also sadly saw the end of one of my favourite TV shows, Chuck. One of the reasons I loved Chuck so much is the music it has introduced me to since I began watching it. To honour the wonderful music supervision on Chuck have a look at Chuck vs the Music, a playlist dedicated to my favourite music on Chuck. After you’ve listened to that, take a look at this interview I did with editor/director/sometimes music supervisor on Chuck, Matt Barber as we chat about music, directing, desert island discs and more.

Now onto the songs! (after the jump)

The Shins- The Shins have a new album out Port of Morrow and they’ve let us listen to upcoming tracks Simple Song” and “September”. Port of Morrow is due March 20.

Jay-Z- Hov and Bey welcomed their baby girl, Blue Ivy, into the Carter-Knowles family in early January. Days after her birth, Jay-Z released this track “Glory” onto the interwebs. Produced by Pharrell and featuring none other than Blue Ivy, it’s a heart warming song from a very very proud pops.

Seasfire- Bristol boys Seasfire started off 2012 very well with a great show at the Communion night. Their track “Falling” is getting heard in all the right places and I chatted to the boys about the comparisons to The Weeknd and Radiohead in this interview

Adam Barnes- This Oxford singer/songwriter also started the year off very nicely with his signing to LAB Records. Currently on tour in the US, the futures looking bright for Barnes, especially with songs like this “She Will Stay Beneath The Moon”.

Emeli Sande- Sande’s eagerly anticipated debut album Our Version of Events was released in February, and I have to say it is amazing. Stand out tracks for me are “Mountains” and “Next To Me”.

The Head and the Heart- The Head and the Heart must have got a major boost when their beautiful song “Rivers and Roads” was used in the closing moments of the Chuck finale. Along with this, they also released the video for the equally beautiful “Down In The Valley”.

Gotye- Gotye’s viral smash “Somebody That I Used To Know was voted in at the number one spot on Triple J’s Hot 100 and it has refused to leave ever since. Helped in part by this unique cover by Walk The Earth, five people-one guitar.

The Antlers- Hey! Look! I did an interview with Michael Lerner from The Antlers! We chatted about influences, recording processes and what’s happening next. (w/ The Guestlist Network)

Miike Snow- Miike Snow have a new album out Happy To You. They’ve already let us listen to “Devil’s Work” and now here’s “Paddling Out”. Happy To You is due March 27.

Ghost Society- Lo-fi glorious sounds with Ghost Society’s “Your Hands

Kidda- Infectiously fun synth pop Kidda with “Together Again”. If you like The Go! Team, have a listen.

The Bullitts- If you haven’t seen the video for The Bullitts’ “Supercool” yet, do it now. Jeymes Samuel + Rosario Dawson= Hilarity.

Jack White- The White Stripes frontman, Jack White has finally released some of solo material and properly solo this time, not under any other name but Jack White, “Love Interruption”.

Busby Marou- Sweet folk pop from aussies Busby Marou and “Biding My Time

Work Drugs- One of our favourite artists from last year, Work Drugs have given us a taster of things to come on the new album with “License to Drive”.

The Griswolds- Aussie infectious indie pop courtesy of The Griswolds and “Mississippi”. If you like Vampire Weeknd or GIVERS, give this a try.

Azure Ray- A little late to the game to this duo, but “Seven Days” sure is beautiful.

Bon Iver- Some live music for you from Bon Iver. First off a special session recorded live including stripped back versions of “Hinnom, TX”, “Wash.”, “Beth/Rest”, “Babys” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. Secondly, here’s Justin Vernon and The Roots on Jimmy Fallon doing a r&b tinged soulful reworking of “Perth”.

disCOVER- A lot of lovely covers for you here. Emil & Friends put their unique spin on M83’s “Midnight City”. Warsonic brought synths to Mumford & Sons “White Blank Page”. The Weeknd’s “The Morning” got the cover treatment from Eliza Doolittle and Saskatchewan. Silverswans brought even more mellowness and melancholia to Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games

Remix, Baby- To bring in 2012, remix extraordinaires RAC have done an amazing remix of some of the best tracks of 2011 for Hypemachine, called RAC vs The Hypemachine. One of my favourite remixres, LEANN GRIMES turned his attention to “Knees” by Peter and Kerry with the remix “Held Hands Coming Apart”. Dark Dark Horse brought lo-fi broodiness to Fossil Collective in his remix of “Without A Fight”.

Chuck vs the Music

Over the weekend NBC’s Chuck came to an end after five seasons. It was bittersweet because it was time but it always sucks to say goodbye to something you love. Chuck was a great show full of heart, good times and great characters. It was also full of some absolutely great music selections introducing me to artists such as The National, Frightened Rabbit, Band of Horses, Local Natives, The Antlers, Blitzen Trapper, Clock Opera, The Naked and Famous, Freelance Whales, Telekinesis to name a few. Oh and it also re-ignited my love and appreciation for Bon Iver (and we all know how much I love them).

Now I know this is a music blog but I want to pay tribute to Chuck and its influence on my music tastes that ultimately filter into what I choose to contribute to ITYLTS. So here’s some of the music that made this show great.

We kick the list off with the stellar “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” by Cake, Chuck’s opening theme…and then enjoy the rest of it.

And if you haven’t ever heard of or watched Chuck just try the pilot…and see how you go from there…

INTERVIEW: The Antlers

Here’s an interview I did with The Antlers’ Miachel Lerner. We chatted about influences, evolution and sneaking into girls sauna…

You played in Bristol last night, how was that? Was there a good crowd?

Yeah, we played at Fun On The Boat (Bristol) You know that place? It’s docked and it was cool. And then we went afterwards to a cider house that was also on a boat. So everything in Bristol you do has to be on a boat.

Yeah, Bristol’s a really fun city.

Yeah it is, but its nice to be back in London

Have you managed to see some of London while you’ve been on tour here?

We get to spend a lot of time here. It’s good, I’m comfortable in London.

How did you find Brighton?

I liked Brighton a lot, I wish that when you’re there, being a seaside town, you could get some sun. We’ve played there a few times, at Conchord two (check) and one of our old TMs lives in Brighton so it kind of feels like a homecoming.

You played loads of festivals over the summer, any that stood out for you?

Around the UK? Yeah, we had really good fun at Green Man. I think there’s that family vibe, its chilled.

Yeah it’s a lot more chilled at Green Man, and you played Reading and Leeds as well, which is a little less chilled shall we say…

Yeah, but for us, not being on the main stage, its a lot less hectic. It was fun, the shows went really well. But I don’t really feel that there’s anything that stuck out as bad. We were in Mexico City a few weeks ago and that was as good as you think it would be. We’re really fortunate.

Talking about the new album Burst Apart, because Hospice was a concept album were you conscious of trying to move away from that or was it more an evolution of the band?

We thought, maybe, that we would see if we could have a go at it and do another concept record, have a go at it. But pretty much from the get go we felt that it would feel forced. The way it was written before by Peter [Silberman] and now it was us as a band, so we thought that wouldn’t fly. It was nice to be able to say creatively, we’re going to literally anything, try anything and then you pick up good bits and build on that.

Did you feel like you had more freedom writing Burst Apart as with writing within a concept its a lot more strict?

Yeah, although in the abstract freedom is good and freedom is bad. In my opinion there’s positives and negatives to both. When you freedom provides more risk taking but puts more pressure on you to make it good. The other way is simpler for me, as Pete would give me an idea of what he was looking for and I’d say we could try this, or this…I enjoyed both really.

Yeah, different experiences but both good?

I didn’t think Hospice this was [pete] telling me what to do, it was still a collaborative process.

On Burst Apart, listening to it there’s so many different styles in there. On I Don’t Want Love is more kind of California soft rock, Parentheses has a trip hop vibe to it and Rolled Together is kind of soulful. Is that something you did together or do each of your bring something to The Antlers?

Again, probably a bit of both. I mean, as a band on tour, when you’re not jammed into your ipods, everyone’s going to discover ‘hey, oh you like this record?’, cool, so we figured out what we didn’t know about our musical tastes. But each of us didn’t always discuss everything that was in our head, sometimes I’d have a concept and try and sneak it in here and there. All of that, good music filters through you and hopefully comes out as something original. But certainly the influences that you said and then some.

Talking about influences, what artists influences you and when you are on the road what are you listening to?

Today, for example, I didn’t really listen to it when it first came out but I listened to that SBTRKT record, like that one. Listening to the new Feist one, which is good but I mean she’s always good, she’s consistent. I find myself going back, and probably before we wrote Burst Apart, I rediscovered a lot R&B. Not just the older stuff, I mean the older R&B I’ve always listened to I’ll never fall away from that, but the more new soul, neo soul. Things like Sade and D’Angelo, at first I thought it was a bit cheesy and I kind of went away from it but then I just realised I shouldn’t resist. I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff.

You can’t go wrong with a bit of Lauryn Hill.

There you go, she is f***ing brilliant.

Hospice was a very do-it-yourself record. Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians to get their music out without the backing of a record label?

First off, its a blessing now that the internet has become everybody’s tool. We had a few people discussing releasing Hospice and we decided it would be the best idea for us to self release it and giving it away for free. If you have no fans you can make zero dollars, I think not being afraid of giving something away for free and get it into as many ears as possible. If you’re interested in being a touring band, when the time is right get yourself out there. But if you go too soon you can be in a bit of a vacuum and no one has come out to see you and that can be depressing and tough.

Yeah, I’ve been to those gigs.

That’s going to be for anybody starting out. We’ve had gigs playing to three people. They suck but you power through and you learn a lot from them. Then you appreciate them a lot more when you’re not doing them.

You’re about to release the companion EP (together) on the 22nd November with collaborations, alternate versions and that awesome cover of The xx’s VCR. I love a good cover, do you have more covers planned for the future?

Yeah but I’m not sure I can let you know about that yet. We’re definitely thinking about throwing some into the live set but I’d love to be able to cover something and release it.

2011 has been crazy for you, what have been the highlights, any things that you’ve got to do that you never thought you would?

Yes, well last year we played at Radio City Music Hall with The National so that was a dream come true and playing with them was a dream come true as well. This year, I would have to say playing on Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon. That was a ‘wow’ moment for me. And all the places that we’ve been that we hadn’t been to before.

What’s the plan for 2012, having a rest, more touring, back in the studio?

I don’t know what rest means…for the holidays we’ll have a bit of a rest. But because we have our own studio, its easy enough we just press the record button and we’d like to get some new ideas down and getting ready for a new release. Besides this EP, in theory we’d like to release something without having to wait so long between releases.

Have a couple of questions that The Guestlist Network ask everyone…If you could fill a swimming pool with anything (except water) what would you fill it with?

I think maybe those gold coins that are actually chocolate. They’d probably melt though…

You’re stranded on a desert island and you can take three famous people, dead or alive, with you, who would they be and why?

Three, no pressure there. I would take George Clooney, it’s stupid, but I feel like his lifestyle suits me…Ricky Gervais is hilarious and how about Jon Stewart. So it would be a bit political, a bit hilarious and for once I wouldn’t be the funniest guy in the room.

Nice. If you were invisible for a day, what trouble would you get up to?

I don’t want to say anything cheeky…I wouldn’t want to be anywhere where I thought anyone was talking about me. Sneaking into the girls sauna…or maybe, I don’t want to say anything too dirty…I might wanna sneak in on someones chat session to a therapist. I mean yeah I would sneak into the girls sauna, but my official answer is the therapist one.

Do you have an exclusive for The Guestlist Network?

Just lots of exciting things coming up and the EP (together)  that’s out November 22nd.

disCOVER: The Antlers “VCR (The xx Cover)”

Two of my favourite things in one, bonus. Here’s The Antlers covering The xx’s VCR. The Antlers manage to make it their own and if this were properly mixed it wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Hospice. (Go over to Stereogum and check out a list of the 10 best xx covers)

Best of 2011 So Far. According to ITYLTS.

Its July, so we’ve just passed into the second half of the year, HIGH FIVES. And with that milestone, every blog seems to be coming out with a best of the year so far list, so we thought we’d do the same. This is based merely on what ITYLTS thinks has been great this year. The only requirements to be on the list is for the track to either be released this year or to have ‘emerged’ this year, and it’s one song per artist. This basically covers songs that have been around maybe since last year but only have been released this year all official like. So here it is and in no particular order:

Let us know if we’ve missed any out…

The Antlers: “I Don’t Want Love”

We started listening to The Antlers second album Burst Apart today again and we realised we hadn’t posted on any songs since our review way back in April. Shame on us. So here’s the albums opener and one of the best songs on the new album I Don’t Want Love. If you haven’t already given it a listen, go do it now (or buy it here)

The Antlers: “Bird Bank”

The Antlers are one of our favourite discoveries of 2011 (yes we know Hospice came out in 2009, we’re clearly not as ‘down’ as we’d like to think) and we were mightily impressed with their follow up Burst Apart released in April. But here’s a track that you may or may not (hey, you’re probably more clued in than us) have heard before. Way back in December 2010, as part of an American Express promotion, three artists Passion Pit, Andrew Bird and The Antlers contributed new or previously unreleased tracks and The Antlers’ Bird Bank was one of them. A happy little synthy instrumental that is miles away from the poignant Hospice though it does remind us a little of Two. Anyway, enjoy Bird Bank

LIVE: The Antlers (Daytrotter Double Shot)

We have raved about The Antlers and rightly so. The 2009 concept album Hospice was incredible, their recently released follow up Burst Apart squashed any worries that they wouldn’t be able to reach the highs that Hospice got to. We reviewed Burst Apart last month and, again, thought it was incredible. Right now we’re going to give you two live performances from Hospice of our favourite tracks from the album: Kettering and Two recorded live at the Daytrotter sessions.
